FISHING FOR EDUCATION

In an ongoing effort to supply area high school seniors with a scholarship opportunity through the
Table Rock Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, your Education Committee is coordinating the Lakes
Area Scholarship Fishing Tournament(s).

Tournaments will be held throughout the year with a % of funds raised going to the
Scholarship program and a % as payout to the top team(s). Come and join us!

In 2009, three $1000 scholarships were offered to Seniors from Blue Eye, Crane, Galena, Hurley and
Reeds Spring. Our hope in 2010 is to again be able to offer three, $1000 scholarships to students
who are seeking to continue their education beyond high school. Students who are going to vocational schools, community colleges and universities are eligible to apply. If you are interested in entering the tournaments or receiving additional information, please contact Brooke at 739-2564 or send her email.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH

Each month at the Chamber luncheons during the school year, we honor an outstanding Teacher chosen by our area schools and present them with an award and prizes. For more information, contact Sue.

 JANUARY - REED SPRING

Mark Settles will have completed his 11th year of teaching middle school math in February, all at Reeds Spring Middle School. After spending some time in the roofing business, his wife encouraged Mark to make a career switch when he fell two and a half stories off of a house. The previous RSMS math teacher had left at Christmas break the year Mark received his teaching degree, and Mark was hired as a new teacher to step into a middle school math class that was somewhat proud of the fact that they had "run off" the previous teacher. Numerous times that year, and a few less times each year since, Mark has had days where falling off of a roof doesn't sound so bad.
Mr. Settles received his degree in Elementary Education from College of the Ozarks, then picked up Middle School certification from SMSU, and an Administration degree through William Woods University. He has been married to his beautiful wife, Alma, for 15 years, and they have three children, Lydia, Rebekah, and Daniel. Mark is very active with his family and his church, where he and Alma both teach Sunday school. Mark's father taught math for 37 years, and although Mark was able to see some negatives in the education field, the impact that his father made on so many individual students was too powerful to keep Mark away from teaching. The number of Reeds Spring students who have benefited from this decision is multiplying every year. Mark was recognized at the Missouri Academy of Science and Math this year by a former student, and he continues to make a difficult subject easy for so many students at RSMS on a daily basis. Mark Settles is a very deserving receipient of the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber of Commerce January Teacher of the Month.

WAYNE HAMILTON GOLF TOURNAMENT

Every Spring and Fall the Chamber of Commerce hosts a golf event for its Chamber Members and guests. Whether you are an avid golfer or never played before, these golf outings are fun for everyone.

The next tournament will be held on April 30, 2010 at the Ledgestone Golf Course at Stonebridge Village in Branson. For more information contact Brooke Patterson at the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber. We also need sponsors and volunteeres for each tournament.

ANNUAL MEETING

Each year the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber of Commerce holds their Annual Meeting and Banquet at the Chateau on the Lake. This is a wonderful event that is highly attended and serves as the biggest fundraiser of the year. The evening begins with a huge Silent Auction, loaded with great items donated by area businesses, wonderful hors d'oeuvres, souvenir photos and beautiful piano music. After the bids are in, everyone is seated for delicious four-course meal at tables beautifully decorated by local businesses. The program consists of a keynote speaker, awards and presentations. To end the evening, each person receives a party favor and the centerpieces are given away as door prizes.

Community Service Award - 2009

Dale & Ruth Ann Schavey are the recipients of the 2009 Community Service Award, presented annually by the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. The Community Service Award is the most prestigious recognition offered by the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber.

The award was presented December 4, 2009 at the Table Rock Lake Area Chamber's Annual Meeting at the Chateau on the Lake Resort, Spa and Convention Center. About 250 people attended the event, which also featured fund-raising live and silent actions of merchandise and services donated by Chamber members and supporters.

Dale & Ruth Ann Schavey are both dedicated to helping others. Dale's expertise in building and remodeling has benefitted Christian Associates, the Kimberling City Senior Center and the Kimberling City Library as well as many individual families. Ruth Ann has served on the Board of the Kimberling City Library for six years. She volunteers her time and talents on many library projects and activities and is always looking for ways to help others. The Schaveys are active in their church and are always willing to serve others through a variety of meetings and church functions.

Teacher of the Year - 2009

REEDS SPRING

Mr. Joseph Spinks has been teaching math at the High School, and coaching Middle School track and football over the past 4 years. He has never been motivated by making extraordinary amounts of money, rather, he has always been interested in doing something that would make a significant difference in the world. Mr. Spinks always wanted to be a teacher because he was greatly impacted by his teachers, and he wanted to have that sort of impact on his students and their future. He believes in continually challenging his students to achieve greater things, while always providing them with the support necessary for them to succeed.
Mr. Spinks greatest achievement was helping his students achieve the impressive results they did on the Algebra I End of Course Examination last year. He is looking forward to many more years of teaching and coaching, as he is hoping that this is just the beginning to a long career in education.

BLUE EYE

Mrs. Michelle Souden has been teaching children for fourteen years. All of those years have been spent with one goal in mind. That goal being that children need a great starting point. Mrs. Souden has been a great starting point for so many since she has spent all her years teaching in a kindergarten classroom.
Ask anyone what is it that stands out about her teaching and it is certain taht everyone will mention the warm smile and genuine enthusiasm she has for her students. Not a day goes by that Mrs. Souden hasn't attempted to share her positive attitude with someone in the building whether that is a child, colleague, or visitor.
A recent visit to her classroom by her principal found that students needed shoes tied, noses swabbed, jackets zipped, coloring pages to be hung, rocks discarded from pockets, and almost all requesting a gentle hug followed by a "Good Morning." Mrs. Souden found time to meet everyone's need during that visit and still had energy to spare. When most adults would throw their hands up or become overwhelmed with all the activity, Mrs. Souden merely states that it is going to be a glorious day in kindergarten and children settle in to their desks and get ready to learn.
Someone once said, "Teachers teach more by what they are than by what they say." Mrs. Souden is a prime example of that. It would be very hard to find someone who could be a better role model for children. She has touched the lives of many by simply being someone who took the time to smile and help in anyway she could.
Blue Eye Elementary students, staff, parents, and community wish to congratulate Mrs. Michelle Souden for her selection as Teacher of the Year.
